A Woman's Place is in the Talmud


Ketubot 67a-b Top
ת"ר יתום ויתומה שבאו להתפרנס מפרנסין את היתומה ואחר כך מפרנסין את היתום מפני שהאיש דרכו לחזור על הפתחים ואין אשה דרכה לחזור יתום ויתומה (דף סז,ב גמרא)  שבאו לינשא משיאין את היתומה ואחר כך משיאין את היתום מפני שבושתה של אשה מרובה משל איש

 Our rabbis taught: An orphan boy and an orphan girl that come (before the tzedakah fund) to be provided for; they provide first for the orphan girl, and afterwards they provide for the orphan boy, because it is the way of the men to return to the doors, and it is not the way of the women to return to the doors. An orphan boy and orphan girl that come (before the tzedakah fund) to marry, they marry the orphan girl first and afterwards they marry the orphan boy, because the embarrassment to a woman is greater than (the embarrassment) of the man.

אמר אביי חמשים זוזי פשיטי ממאי מדקתני סיפא אם יש בכיס מפרנסין אותה לפי כבודה ואמרינן מאי כיס אמר רחבה ארנקי של צדקה ואי סלקא דעתין חמשים זוזי ממש אם יש בכיס כמה יהבינן לה אלא שמע מינה חמשים זוזי פשיטי

 Abaye said: 50 pshiti zuz. How do we know this? As it was taught in the seifa of the Mishnah: 'If there is enough in the kis, provide for her according to her honor. And they said, 'what is a kis?' Rachba said: a bag for tzedakah. They might have thought 50 mamash zuz, but the phrase 'if there is enough in the kis'? How could they afford to give it all to her? Rather, it is taught 50 pshiti zuz.

Mishnah Ketubot 6:3

 

משנה- המשיא את בתו סתם, לא יפחות לה מחמשים זוז. פסק להכניסה ערומה- לא יאמר הבעל "כשאכניסנה לביתי אכסנה בכסותי" אלא מכסה ועודה בבית אביה. וכן המשיא את היתומה לא יפחות לה מחמשים זוז. אם יש בכיס מפרנסין אותה לפי כבודה ...גמרא 

Mishnah- The one who marries off his daughter may not give her a dowry of less than 50 zuz. If he agrees to bring her in naked, the husband may not say 'When she comes into my house, I will clothe her in my clothes,' rather he must clothe her while she is still in her father's house. And so too the one who marries an orphan girl may not give her less than 50 zuz. If there is enough in the kis , they provide her according to her kavod.
